SUMMER INTERNSHIPS IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
Appalachian Laboratory, Frostburg,
Maryland
The University of Maryland Center for Environmental
Science Appalachian Laboratory (AL) located in Frostburg,
MD is offering undergraduate research internships for the
summer of 2005. Interns will assist AL scientists in field
and lab research on an established watershed research project
funded by the A.W. Mellon foundation to promote collaboration
between AL and Appalachian College Association (ACA) schools

Students will receive a stipend of $3,500 for a ten-week
session.
REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must have a strong background in biology and
chemistry and be able to work safely and efficiently in
a laboratory setting. Applicants must also be able to hike
in rugged terrain. Preference will be given to students
who attend ACA colleges, but this search is not limited
to those schools. The starting date is flexible, but is
expected to be on or before May 30, 2005.
SETTING
Interns will work at Appalachian Laboratory (http://www.al.umces.edu),
a 47,000 square foot state-of-the-art environmental research
facility located on the campus of Frostburg State University
in the mountains of western Maryland. The lab is located
approximately 2.5 hours from Baltimore and Pittsburgh and
is nestled within some of Maryland's best hiking, fishing,
and camping areas (http://www.visitwesternmaryland.com).
